The trek to Tungnath temple is incomplete if you don’t visit Chandrashila. Chandrashila is the closest you can get to experience pure bliss, beauty and tranquillity anywhere on Mother Earth. According to stories here, the Moon God meditated here and this is how it got its name. It is also said that Lord Rama also meditated here after killing Ravana. I have been to many Himalayan summits but there is something special and different about Chandrashila. The air here seems completely pure and divine. I have meditated here at sunrise and also at sunset and it seemed that I was transported to a different place as if I was in trance. This is one place where one must visit and stay for some time to actually experience what Chandrashila is.
It is different than the rest of the trek. The trek to Chandrashila starts from a narrow path behind the temple and is about a kilometre long. Though the distance is not much, the elevation of the trek is very steep and you have to stop a lot to catch your breath. The top point of Chandrashila is at about 4000 metre above sea level. So the air is very fresh and at times it feels that the oxygen levels are very low.
The highest mountains in the area are at about 7000 metres, so from the Chandrashila peak you can get close views of the Himalayan ranges. The entire Himalayan range which includes mountains like Nanda Devi, Chaukhambha, Trishul can be seen from Chandrashila. I would recommend carrying good binocular and powerful lens cameras to Chandrashila for excellent views of the landscape around. On a clear day, the pictures which one can click will keep the memories of Chandrashila always fresh in their minds. It is recommended to carry sufficient water and some snacks for the trek from Tungnath to Chandrashila as the entire route is deserted and has no shops. Very few people are able to trek beyond Tungnath, so you can enjoy the trek in peace. The summit is also not crowded and you can easily sit there to meditate or just spend time appreciating the majestic beauty of Nature.
The trek is open all the year round but it is usually advisable to avoid the trek during heavy monsoons and heavy snowfall as it makes the trek very difficult. One should use Trekking shoes and Trekking sticks for climbing the peak to avoid any injuries. A trekking guide can also be hired for the trek. Chandrashila is the place which should be on the list of your must visit places if you want to have a bird’s eye view of the beautiful Chopta valley and the Himalayan Mountains. I can assure you that there is no other place which comes even closer in terms of the spectacular views and the overall beauty which can be experienced from the summit.
