A simple Google search on the “Best Hotels in Chopta” will give you multiple options from websites like Makemytrip, Tripadvisor, Airbnb, Goibibo etc. To confuse you even more you will also find a few blogs recommending” top stay options” for tourists in Chopta. But all these lack unbiased and correct information about stay options in Chopta. Through this blog I will try to provide authentic information about hotels and camps in Chopta which might be useful for your future Chopta Tungnath trip.
As most of you are already aware that Chopta Valley is a very picturesque and beautiful green meadows on the main Gopeshwar Chamoli road. It has been a very popular destination among families and also among the religious and adventure tourists. The reason being its beautiful and serene meadows and the mountain views it offers. It is also famous for the highest Shiva temple in the world – the Tungnath temple and its trek. The Tungnath trek is one of the most popular treks in Uttarakhand and is suitable even for beginners. Chopta also offers an opportunity to trek up to the Deoria Tal which is another popular destination among tourists.
Chopta is a beautiful valley spread over 3-4 kms and falls under the Kedarnath Wildlife sanctuary. Most of its area comes under the protected forest land and the local administartion has imposed a number of restrictions to preserve the beauty of the nature and also to protect the fragile ecology of the valley. There is a restriction on the total number of hotels/camps that can operate in Chopta. This number is usually decided by the district administration before the start of the tourist season in consultation with the local villagers. There is complete ban on construction of any permanent structures in Chopta. So any hotel claiming to be operating in Chopta with a permanent structure is either lying or is situated outside the Chopta valley protected zone.

There is no electricity connection anywhere in Chopta, therefore all resorts operate here on solar power only. There is generally no mobile connection at most of the places in the valley as there are no mobile towers constructed in the forest area. There are very few shops in and around Chopta and most of the food and other necessary items are brought from distant settlements. Therefore most hotels offer only limited food menu and that too depends upon the availability. The nearest village is Makku Math which is 25 kms from Chopta and is the source of daily ration needs and other basic requirements.

How we provide service in snowfall-
Chopta being situated in the Upper Himalayas, experiences a very harsh winter. The months from December to February are very cold and Chopta gets regular snowfall during these 3 months. The entire valley at times gets snow covered. Therefore the solar panels offer only limited relief and we provide emergency flash lights to our guests. We provide hot water to our guests for their daily needs. All rooms are provided with 3-4 blankets of good quality to keep our guests warm.
What to expect and what to carry in winters -
Guests coming during the snowfall season can expect the roads to be blocked after a sudden snowfall. They may get stuck at one place till the local authorities clear the snow from the road. One can expect the temperatures to dip a lot at night. It can easily touch 10 or 15 degrees below freezing point. The guests are therefore advised to carry with them proper heating woolens and jackets.
Though we have some basic emergency medicines, the guests are advised to carry with them some medicines which they might need. They can also carry Thermo steel bottles to keep the water warm and hot water muslin or rubber bags to sleep with. It ensures warmth to the body while sleeping. For those who love drinking, a bottle of rum or brandy is usually helpful to keep the cold at bay. For those who don’t, it is advisable to consume a lot of warm fluids whenever possible. It is not advisable for kids under 10 and old people to visit during the snow season as they may not be able to cope with the extreme cold at Chopta.
