Uttrakhand is also called as the “Devbhoomi” or "the land of Gods" because of the presence of many temples
In this blog I will write about my state – Uttarakhand, which is also called “The Land of Gods”. Uttarakhand is situated at the foothills of Himalayas and has international borders with China (Tibet) and Nepal. The northern part of the state is hilly and it is here that most of the tourist destinations, including the Char Dham are located. It is said that Uttrakhand is also called as the “Devbhoomi” or the land of Gods because of the presence of many temples and pilgrimage centers present here. But in my opinion it is called so because of the way Nature has blessed this place.

The abundance of natural beauty here makes it a place where Gods would have preferred to live in the ancient times. There is so much to see and explore in this small Northern state of India that a trip to Uttarakhand should be a must for all the tourists planning a holiday.
Uttarakhand Geography -
Uttarakhand state is more than 85% hilly. Despite the tough terrain, evidence of human settlement has been found here from the pre-historic days and it has been reported by the Archaeological survey of India. The state is very green and has more than 60% of its area covered under forests. The State is broadly divided into 2 main areas – Garhwal and Kumaon. Both areas have their own distinct language, food and culture.
There are a large number of small lakes and streams across the state and the two most important rivers – The Ganga and the Yamuna also originate from here. It also has a large variety of wild animals, which are found in the famous Jim Corbett National Park, the Rajajai National Park and the Nanda Devi National park. The whole state is full of a variety of plants, rare herbs, wild animals and rare Himalayan birds. This place is an absolute delight for all nature lovers and bird watchers.
Uttrakhand Culture-
Uttarakhand has a very rich culture and heritage. Though Hindi is the most preferred language, Sanskrit is also recognized as an official language here. Garhwali and Kumaoni is mostly spoken by the locals in the hills. The temples and the various drawings and paintings on their walls show the rich tradition of art and craft of the people here. The local handicraft is very famous and the shawls and rugs made by them are very much in demand.
Food and music have an important place in the people’s heart here. The diet is mainly vegetarian with locally grown wild grains, vegetables and pulses forming the major food. The locals love their folk music and they celebrate most of the occasions by singing their songs with the beats of Dhols. Their folk songs are really sweet to the ears and is very popular. A number of Hindu festivals are celebrated by the locals with a lot of enthusiasm and fanfare. One must try to attend one of these celebrations, whenever one is travelling to Uttarakhand.

The entire state is full of many tourist locations and places worth visiting. We list here a few famous and must visit places –
Nainital – A very beautiful hill station on the bank of Naina lake, situated in Kumaon
Mussoorie – The queen of the hills, located in Garhwal
Rishikesh- The Yoga capital of India situated close to Dehradun airport.
Auli- Famous for Skiing in Winters
Lansdowne – Beautiful hill station, close to Delhi and NCR
Mukteshwar- Famous for Mukteshwar Dham and very clear views of the Himalayan range
Valley of Flowers- A UNESCO world heritage site, full of beautiful flowers.
Haridwar- Famous for Ganga Aarti and Kumbh Mela, usually visited for prayers and a holy dip in the Ganges.
Kausani- Hill station with clear views of Himalayas.
Ranikhet – Hill station developed by the British and which still has that Colonial feel.
Jim Corbett National Park – Arguably the best National park in India which is famous for Tiger sightings.
Dhanaulti – Less visited and a beautiful hill station.
Chopta – Full of beautiful green meadows, campsites and lots of trekking options around.
Char Dham- Kedarnath,Badrinath, Yamnotri and Gangotri
Tehri Garhwal – Famous for the Tehri dam and water sports
Binsar – A famous and beautiful hill station popular among bird watchers.
Offbeat places of Uttarakhand –
Pangot- Situated about 30 kms from Nainital, this is a beautiful hill station away from the crowd. It is famous for bird watching and offers peace and rejuvenation to the travelers.
Tungnath and Chandrashila – This is the highest Shiva temple, and is also famous for first time trekkers. The views from the top is simply amazing.
Bhowali- Located far from the crowded hill station, it offers peace and beautiful views of the nature.
Harsil – A quiet and peaceful location full of apple orchards and beautiful views of the Himalayas.
Ramgarh- A beautiful hill station with colonial era bungalows and lots of orchards.
Deoria Tal and Sari village – Beautiful lake with crystal clear water and offers views of the Himalayan peaks in the water.
Things one can do in Uttarakhand –
River rafting , Bungee jumping and Flying Fox in Rishikesh
Camping in the open meadows at Chopta or at the river bank near Rsihikesh.
Boating in the Naini lake at Nainital.
